Mahama Ayariga was born on May 12, 1974, in Bawku of the Upper East Region of Ghana. He is the son of Frank Abdulai Ayariga and Anatu Ayariga. His father was a member of parliament for the Bawku Constituency during the third republic administration of Hilla Limann.
Mahama Ayariga attended Barewa College in Zaria in Kaduna State, Nigeria before proceeding to Harvard Law School where he graduated with a Master of Law (LLM) degree. He also holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree from the University of Ghana, Legon.
